Commissions by Alison McIlkenny

Looking for something truly personal for your home (or the perfect gift)? Alison creates one-off original artworks on commission—made around your space, your colours, and your story.

A commission is a relaxed, collaborative process. It starts with your ideas and inspiration, then develops into a clear plan before Alison begins painting.

Step-by-step: your thought process before you enquire
1) Where will the artwork live?
Think about the room and the exact spot you want it to go.

  • Living room feature wall?

  • Hallway statement piece?

  • Bedroom, kitchen, office, or a special nook?

  • Is it replacing an existing piece?

If you can, take a quick photo of the wall from a few angles (and include nearby furniture for scale).

2) Choose a size (or a size range)
You don’t need to know the “perfect” size—just a starting point.
Consider:

  • Width & height of the wall space (approximate is fine)

  • Whether you want landscape, portrait, or square

  • If you prefer one large statement piece or something more subtle

Tip: Use masking tape on the wall to mark out a few possible sizes and see what feels right.

3) Think about your colour scheme
Your artwork can:

  • Match your existing room colours

  • Complement them with softer tones

  • Add a bold pop of contrast

Helpful info to share:

  • 2–4 key colours already in the room (paint, sofa, cushions, rugs, etc.)

  • Any colours you love… and any you really don’t want

  • If you’re not sure, photos of the room are perfect—Alison can guide you.

4) Decide on the “vibe” you want
This part is more important than people think. Ask yourself:

  • Calm and minimal, or bright and energetic?

  • Soft and dreamy, or bold and striking?

  • Something contemporary, or something more classic?

If you’ve seen any of Alison’s pieces you love, tell us which ones—this helps instantly.

5) Share your vision (even if it’s only a rough idea)
You don’t need to have it fully figured out. But having a direction helps the process.
You might already know:

  • The subject (for example: abstract, floral, coastal, nature-inspired, etc.)

  • A theme or meaning (a memory, a place, a person, a feeling)

  • Any must-have elements (or anything to avoid)

Even a simple line like “I want something warm and uplifting for our new living room” is a great start.

6) Gather inspiration
Send anything that helps communicate your taste:

  • Room photos

  • Colour swatches

  • Pinterest board links

  • Screenshots of styles you love

  • A few Alison pieces you’re drawn to

This is where the “open discussion” begins and the idea becomes clear.
What happens next?

7) Chat & concept
Once Alison has your info, you’ll discuss:

  • Size and format

  • Colour direction

  • Overall style and composition

  • Timeframe and next steps

You’ll leave the conversation knowing exactly what you’re getting and how it will fit your space.

8) Painting begins
After the plan is agreed, Alison starts creating your artwork—built around the brief you’ve developed together.
